Knowledge of radiation dates back to the discovery and use of X- rays in the 1890's. It was soon realized that radiation had harmful effects as well as beneficial health uses. As technology advanced and radioactive materials and machine generated radiation came into wider use, the dangers of exposure to radiation became better known. We know that radioactivity is a natural as well as a human-made phenomenon. Our surroundings, behaviors, medical needs and even our diets expose us to radiation. Controlling exposure to radiation is necessary for adequate protection of workers, the general public and the environment.
